Seminar and Hands-on Activity with 3M Filtek Bulk-Fill Posterior composite conducted by Department of Operative Dentistry at Bahria University Medical and Dental College

The Department of Operative Dentistry of Bahria University Medical and Dental College conducted a Seminar in collaboration with 3M Dental on Monday 23rd January, 2017. The subject of the seminar was “Filtek Posterior Restorative Composite”, a lecture delivered by Dr. Basim Munir, who is a graduate of Baqai University, Karachi. Among the guests were Principal Dental section Bahria University Medical and Dental College Dr. Zubair Ahmed Abbasi, and Head of Department Operative Dentistry, Dr. Shama Asghar.

The attendees were lecturers of the Dental Section and students of final year BDS of Bahria University Medical and Dental College.  Dr Basim began his lecture on the treatment of caries using Filtek Bulk Fill posterior restorative composite material, highlighting the key features of the material including the need for less increments and higher depth of cure, forming a restoration with superior strength and a highly polished surface. The lecture highlighted the properties of the new material and its comparison to conventional composite systems with its advantages. This material brought a new perspective of managing posterior carious lesions without the need for applying layers of increments, consuming time and larger amounts of material.

Final year BDS students learned the technique of using Filtek Bulk Fill material, from cavity preparation to final finishing using their specialized Soflex disks designed to polish all surfaces of a posterior restoration, including deep pits and fissures on the occlusal surface.

At the end of the session, Dr. Basim also demonstrated a comparison of curing lights, whereby the 3M curing light had a far higher depth of cure than common lights available in the market, showing that polymerization of posterior Bulk Fill material would be complete where as a common curing light would not create a completely cured, hard posterior restoration due to lack of curing depth.

A question and answer interactive session took place where the students and lecturers had a number of questions from the speaker, indicating that this new perspective on treating posterior carious lesions was certainly interesting for all.  The Principal shared his views on the interesting subject and commended Dr. Basim for bringing forth this new method of treating posterior caries, and the need for more such seminars in future.
