Allied Health Sciences (BUCAHS)

Bahria University College of Allied Health Sciences (BUCAHS) was established in 2018 with the initiation of BS-MLT (Medical Lab Technology) program as a first step to develop Allied Health Sciences College. Later on, BS-Biotechnology (4 years) program was added in 2023 to the BU College of Allied Health Sciences as horizontal expansion of the college.

 

State of art facilities and adroit faculty of this college ensure smooth transition of a student to a highly trained allied health practitioner. The mandate of allied health science education is to equip future allied health professionals with requisite knowledge skills and attitude.

 

The infrastructure of campus includes spacious lecture halls, tutorial rooms, basic science laboratories, video linked conference room, library, auditorium, cafeteria, gym, common rooms for boys and girls, prayer room, sick bay facility, student clubs for grooming talent and teaching hospital PNS Shifa for clinical training.

INTERNATIONAL TRAININGS

 

Faculty of Allied Health Sciences Dr. Madiha Kanwal and Mrs. Hiba Saleem participated in a 5-day workshop on “Responsible Conduct in Genomic Sciences” in Bangkok, Thailand. NIH, FIC, USA, organized the workshop in collaboration with PABSA. It aimed to train scientists and scientific/public health organizations in Pakistan on the principles of responsible conduct in genomic sciences, with a focus on addressing security, ethical considerations, and transparency issues related to genomics-based research.

 

PREWORKSHOP IN BUHSC CONFERENCE

Patent Drafting and Filingpre-workshop was held at the fifth BUHSCK international conference on 7 June 2023, focusing on Contemporary Trends in Quality Healthcare. The workshop was organized in collaboration with the Intellectual Property Organization (IPO) of Pakistan, targeting postgraduate students and researchers. Prof. Dr. Mehreen Lateef, Principal BUCAHS, appreciated the efforts of IPO Pakistan for collaboration and organizing an informative and interactive session.

 

 

WORKSHOP ON “BIOLOGICAL RISK MITIGATION”

Dr. Madiha Kanwal, participated in 3-days Train the Trainer Workshop on “Biological Risk Mitigation” from May 11-13, 2023, held at LUMHS, Hyderabad.

 

WORKSHOP ON “RESEARCH PROPOSAL WRITING- SECRETS AND REASONS FOR FAILURE”

Faculty of Allied Health Science Mrs. Shabana Wasif and Mr. M. Adeel Siddiqui participated in three days’ workshop on “Research proposal Writing- Secrets and reasons for Failure” held on March 10, 14 & 17, 2023 at KIBGE.

Senior Associate professor Dr. Nain Tara was invited as guest Speaker in the 14th International Biennial Conference organized by the Pakistan Society for Microbiology (FIBC-PSM 2023) in collaboration with Salim Habib University in Karachi held on Nov 22-24-2023.

 

PROFESSIONAL TRAINING ON “USE CARE & MAINTENANCE OF HIGH- TECH SCIENTIFIC & LABORATORY INSTRUMENTS”

Senior Biomedical Engineer Mr. M. Adeel Siddiqui participated in two days professional training on “Use Care & Maintenance of High- Tech Scientific & Laboratory Instruments” held on November 29-30, 2023 at PCSIR, Karachi.

 

POSTGRADUATE RESEARCH CONFERENCE

Ms. Shafaq Mehmood presented a research poster at the Centre of Excellence in Women’s Health & Research’s Postgraduate Research Conference 2023, held on March 21st, 2023, at JPMC.

 

EDUCATION FAIR AT ALPHA COLLEGE

Faculty members of BUCAHS attended an education fair at Alpha College, PECHS, and Karachi, distributed Brochures and briefed students regarding eligibility criteria, the annual announcement of admission, and the admission procedure. At the end of the session, BU faculty received a token of appreciation.

 

STUDENTS ACTIVITIES

 

PHLEBOTOMY WORKSHOP

Bahria University College of Allied Health Sciences organized the phlebotomy workshop in collaboration with Rahila Research and Reference Lab Pvt Ltd on 21 March 2023 at BUCAHS. The main purpose of the workshop was to equip the MLT students with theoretical and practical phases of phlebotomy techniques.

 

STUDENT RESEARCH WORKSHOP

The “Fundamental of use of lab animals in research” hybrid workshop took place on August 4, 2023, at Bahria University Health Sciences Campus in collaboration with the Department of Biochemistry, Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences. Targeted towards post-graduate students and researchers. The workshop aimed to enhance participants’ knowledge of the safe and effective use of laboratory animals, providing insights into the 3Rs of animal research: Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement.

 

 

SECOND NATIONAL BUCAHS POSTER COMPETITION

The Medical Laboratory Department organized the 2nd BUCAHS STUDENTS’ POSTER COMPETITION on Emerging Trends in Clinical Lab Sciences on 1st January 2024. This grand poster completion was attended by more than ten universities of Karachi. The aim was to share knowledge and promote science for the better diagnosis treatment and management of emerging pathogens and related pathological conditions.

 

MLTAP SEMINAR

The 11th MLTAP seminar was a significant part of the 20th Health Asia International exhibition and conferences held in Karachi, Pakistan, from October 19-21, 2023. This seminar, centered on “Good Lab Practices: Pathway to Reliable Diagnostics,” featured esteemed keynote speakers such as Muhammad Ali Malik, Central President, Prof. Dr. Saeed Khan (HOD Pathology, DUHS), Dr. Syeda Sadaf Akbar, Dr. Nida Baig, and Prof. Dr. Shaista Bano. The organizing committee, led by Dr. Mehreen Lateef. The seminar also hosted a student poster competition; with 22 posters from various health, Sciences University is displaying their research. The event concluded with the distribution of prizes to recognize the best posters.

 

INTERNSHIP AT MDRL

15-day Summer Internship Program, conducted from August 28 to September 15, 2023, stands as a testament to the commitment of aspiring laboratory professionals from Ziauddin University, Sir Syed University, and Faisalabad University. The program, thoughtfully designed and expertly facilitated by professionals covered a spectrum of crucial subjects in the realm of laboratory sciences. OPEN HOUSE 2023

Open house was organized on 19 Dec, 2023. Nine colleges were invited form different areas of Karachi. The entire session was divided into campus visit, introductory session by Dean Health Sciences M. Gen. Prof. Dr. Shehla Baqai and other Principals and Vice Principals from BUCAHS, BUCPT and BSN. At the end of the session, Q/As was planned which resolved a huge number of queries among students.

 

 

INTERNSHIP OF MLT STUDENTS AT RAHILA LAB, KIDNEY CENTRE AND OTHER LABORATORIES

MLT students participated in an internship program at various healthcare facilities including Rahila Lab, the Kidney Centre, and others. This practical experience complemented classroom learning by allowing them to specialized in areas such as renal diagnostics, gaining hands-on experience in diagnostics, laboratory techniques, quality assurance observe advanced procedures, and develop essential technical and communication skills in a real-world clinical setting.

This collaboration between education and healthcare strengthens the foundation for future MLT professionals. Their insightful contributions have not only propelled advancements in medical science but have also garnered praise from healthcare professionals.

 

 

CONVOCATION 2024

The 10th Convocation of Bahria University Health Sciences Campus Karachi was held on 25thMay 2024. More than 291 students from MPhil, Medical, Dental, Physiotherapy, Nursing and Medical Lab Technology received their degrees from rector Vice Admiral Asif Khalique, the honorable Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) and Pro-Chancellor of the university who was the Chief Guest of the event which was organized in the Ibn-e-Sina auditorium of the campus.

 

 

EDUCATIONAL VISITS

TRAINING ON “EFFECTIVE BIOLOGICAL RISK MITIGATION STRATEGIES”

Biotechnology and MLT students attended a pre-conference hand on training on “effective biological risk mitigation strategies” held on December 19, 2023 at Dr. A. Q. Khan Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (KIBGE), University of Karachi.

 

 

COMMUNITY SUPPORT PROGRAMS

VISIT TO AL-MUSTAFA ACADEMY

MLT students OF Bahria University College of allied health sciences embarked on a community trip to Al – Mustafa Academy in Karachi, Pakistan. Before going there, students collected some amount of charity for children’s and bought some juices and biscuits for them students also arranged some awareness activity for them on the topic ‘HAND HYGINE’.

 

VISIT TO DAR-UL-SUKOON
On May 9th, 2024, Thursday MLT students embarked on a community trip to Dar ul Sukoon Special Child Institute in Karachi, Pakistan.

 

VISIT TO EDHI CENTER ORPHANAGE
A visit was organized to an orphanage managed by Edhi Centre under the supervisison of Principal allied health sciences Professor Dr. Mehreen Lateef. The students contributed for arranging gifts and toys for the young friends there at the orphanage

 

BLOOD DONATION DRIVE:
Department of medical lab technology arranged a trip to Omair sana foundation for blood donation drive and for seminar on thalassemia arranged by Aga khan hospital.

 

HEPATITIS B & C CAMP AT MDRL, BUHSC

Medical students at MDRL BUCAHS organized Hepatitis B & C camp. The camp provided an invaluable opportunity to deepen understanding of hepatitis, from its causes to preventive measures and treatment options. Interacting with fellow participants and sharing journeys created a sense of community and support that was transformative. Learning about the latest advancements in hepatitis research empowered students with knowledge to actively manage their health. The camp also served as a platform to break down societal stigmas associated with the disease, fostering a more inclusive and understanding environment.
