The students of MBBS are imparted the knowledge of science and Art of Medicine and Surgery using the modern principles and practices of teaching and training, at Bahria University Medical and Dental College Karachi. The undergraduates are trained in the surgical sciences in the 3rd,4th and 5th Years of MBBS Course. The curricula are designed to integrate with all the basic and other clinical sciences. Teaching tools used are interactive lectures, small group discussions, Problem Based Learning (PBL), Problem Solving Interactive Learning (PSIL), Clinicopathology Conference (CPCs), Seminars, Symposia and journal club sessions. Surgical skills are imparted in the “Surgical Skill Workshop”. They are daily rotated and taught ‘hand on’ in the wards, operation room, outpatient and emergency departments. They also have evening ward rounds and teaching. They are regularly posted to the Intensive Care Units (ICU) and Radiology departments. The college has both formal and summative examinations and internal assessments. The tools used for assessments are assignments, Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE), Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and Short Answer Questions. Along with the communication skills; mannerism is also stressed upon. Log Books are used to record their training activities which are frequently assessed and scored. At the end of MBBS course the student should be able to interact appropriately with the surgical patients; solve their problems intelligently empathically with confidence. They should practice evidence based surgery with respect and dignity and do “No Harm” to the patients keeping in view their autonomy and develop the habit of staying updated in their profession.
