Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery is a branch that deals with the art of diagnosis and treatment of various diseases, pathology and defects involving the oro-facial region. This specialty has evolved through the ages and presently the oral & maxillofacial surgeon in addition to Minor Oral Surgery deals with the various craniofacial pathologies in a multi disciplinary environment.
The specialty of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery has a varied scope. The undergraduate program deals with extraction of teeth and management of complications arising thereafter, along with the management of medical emergencies on the dental chair as well as various dentoalveolar surgical procedures.
This program involves lectures, seminars, clinical training in the last two years of the four – year dental curriculum. Students are exposed to a wide variety of oro-facial pathologies, maxillofacial trauma and reconstructive osteotomies. All students get an extensive knowledge of asepsis in clinical practice along with clinical experience in extractions and observation and assistance in minor and major surgical procedures. Those interested in research will be able tocollaborate in some of the ongoing research projects in the department.
