Doctor Of Physical Therapy (DPT)

Physical Therapy, also known as physiotherapy is a dynamic profession concerned with evaluation and rehabilitation of patient disabled by pain, disease, or injury and their treatment by physical therapeutic measure. The objective of the program is to produce group of highly competent physiotherapists to fulfill the increasing atnational and international level.

Doctor of physiotherapy (DPT):-  The doctor of physiotherapy (DPT) – 5 years program is a Post-baccalaureate degree conferred upon successful completion of  duration. The DPT Degree was created by American Physiotherapy Association (APTA). The “Vision 2020” states that “By 2020, physical therapy will be provided by physical therapists who are doctors of physiotherapy recognized by consumers & other health-care professionals as the practitioners of choice to whom consumers have direct access for the diagnosis of, intervention for, & prevention of impairments, functional limitations, & disabilities related to movement, function & health.

History of Physiotherapy in Pakistan:- The school of Physiotherapy was established in 1956 by the Federal Government, Ministry of Health & Social Welfare with the assistance of World Health Organization (WHO) at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center premises. Initially, the school offered a 2 years Diploma course with the minimum entrance qualification of matriculation (science group). In 1961, the 2 years program was upgraded to a 3 years Diploma. Later on, the program was raised to BSc Physiotherapy Degree (3 years) in 1963, affiliated with the University of Karachi, and pertinent changes were added & made in the syllabus according to the need. The International faculties of Physiotherapy had upgraded their syllabi. In order to match those standards; in 1999, BSc Physiotherapy course was upgraded to 4 years BS Physiotherapy Degree Course. Recently, following the “Vision 2020 of APTA”, the 4 years BSPT Program was upgraded to 5 years DPT (Doctor of Physiotherapy) Program in 2008 to meet the International standard. At present, 26 Institutions are serving in the field of Physiotherapy in Pakistan.

The Bahria university started DPT program on 15th February,2017.Dpt is a five year program,having 10 semesters.each semester is of 6 months which includes 18 weeks of education,examination and semester break.

The mission of BUMDC is to discover, disseminate, and apply knowledge in the various areas of the health sciences.

The college aims to realize this mission by:

  • Training the health sector workforce of the future.
  • Conducting research that creates new knowledge in the field of health sciences and reviews improvement in existing bodies of knowledge.
  • Providing innovative, patient-oriented health care.
  • Contributing to the economic development and well being of Pakistan through integrated programs in education, research and clinical care.
  • Participation in social uplift programmes to eliminate poverty

Duration: 5 Years

ELIGIBIITY :Any one of the following qualifications is necessary for an applicant to be eligible for consideration. All foreign qualifications must be supported by an Equivalence Certificate issued by Inter Board Committee of Chairmen (IBCC) of Pakistan with the application.

  • A minimum overall score of 60% in Pre-Medical group of Higher Secondary School Certification or equivalent in Pakistan.
  • British Advanced Level Certification with Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The score should be over 60% (Pre-Medical) in the IBCC Equivalence.
  • US Grade-12 or Canadian-Grade 12 or 13 Diploma (minimum GPA 3.0) accompanied by an Equivalence Certificate from the IBCC of at least 60% HSSC Pre-Medical qualification (that will require inclusion of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and English in the final 3 years).
  • Higher Secondary School Certificate (12th grade) from other countries with Biology, Chemistry and Physics accompanied by an Equivalence Certificate from IBCC of at least 60% HSSC pre-medical qualification.

GOALS OF THE PROGRAMME THE PURPOSE OF THE DOCTOR OF PHYSICAL THERAPY PROGRAMME(DPT) IS TO PREPARE PHYSICAL THERAPISTS WHO WILL:
1.Be primary providers of physical therapy care.
2.Serve as responsible members in the professional communityand are willing and able to assume leadership roles inthe communities they serve.
3.Identify researchable problems, advocate and participate inresearch, and incorporate research findings into clinical practice.
4.Understand and place in context the social, economic and cultural issues of practice and effectively advocate for changes in policy
5.Correlate theory with practice and think creatively about, react to, adapt or shape new practice environments.
6.Participate in and provide education for communities, patients, peers, students and others.
OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME:
GRADUATES OF THE DOCTOR OF PHYSICAL THERAPY PROGRAMMEWILL:
1.Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of the basic and clinical sciences relevant to physical therapy, both in their fundamental context and in their application to the discipline of physical therapy.
2.Understand, correlate and apply theoretical foundations of knowledge to the practice of physical therapy; evaluate and clarify new or evolving theory relevant to physical therapy.
3.Demonstrate the behaviors of the scholarly clinician by developing and utilizing the process of critica
l thinking and inquiry, particularly focused on the improvement of the practice of physical therapy and the delivery
of health care.
4.Engage in reflective practice through sound clinical decision making, critical self-assessment and commitment to lifelong
learning.
5.Demonstrate mastery of entry level professional clinical skills.
Provision of these services is based on the best available evidence and includes physical therapy examination, evaluation, diagnosis, prognosis, intervention, prevention activities, wellness initiatives and appropriate health care utilization.
