On 6th Feb’17, the Department of Community Dentistry, under the umbrella of Community Support Program(CSP) carried out an “Oral health education session” at Central prison for women Karachi. The CSP team, comprised of Dr. Kulsoom Fatima Rizvi Vice-principal dental section and head of Department, Dr. Raima Bashir, Dr. Nazish Zafar, Dr. Hira Raza (Senior Lecturers), Dr. Sadaf Shamim & Dr. Hafsa (House officers).
Mr. Nusrat Hussain Mangan (Inspector General of Prison Sindh) was pleased to grant permission for conducting the session. Mrs. Sheebah Shah (Senior Superintendent) welcomed the CSP team and showed us around. The vicinity of the Jail compound was very tidy, discipline was being practiced with strict security measures. The team was then guided towards the women barracks and allocated hall where all the prisoners were gathered. The session was started by Dr. Nazish Zafar with a lecture on oral diseases, its impact on the oral health and risk factors associated with it. It was followed by an interactive talk by Dr. Raima Bashir who highlighted the importance of regular oral hygiene practices for prevention of oral diseases. The audience was very enthusiastic and responded well during the question answer session. The queries of the participants were addressed and they were very happy on gaining important oral hygiene knowledge. Oral examination was also carried out and free consultation was provided on spot.
The session concluded with distribution of Oral Hygiene Kits and toothpaste by Dr. Kulsoom Fatima Rizvi. Oral Examination was performed on prisoners and they were advised according to their needs.
The Senior Superintendent (Mrs. Sheeba Shah) herself attended the session and appreciated the efforts of Bahria University Medical & Dental College on the conduction of oral health education session. She requested Dr. Kulsoom Fatima Rizvi to visit juvenile prison and Men Prison for further Oral Health Sessions in future on regular basis.
