Model United Nations or MUN is an academic simulation of the United Nations that aims to provide students with a political, strategic, and economic perspective of the world. The participants role-play as diplomats representing a country in simulated sessions of various committees of the United Nations. Participants research a country, take on roles as diplomats, investigate international issues, debate, deliberate, consult, and then develop solutions to world problems by reaching a consensus and developing a mutually acceptable resolution document in accordance to the standards of the United Nations.
The eighth iteration of the Bahria University Model United Nation (BUMUN) will be held 2nd to 4th March 2018 under the Presidency of Mr. Izhar-us-Salam Kayani and Secretary General Ms. Sara Jamil of the Department of Computer Science. While Mr. Khurram Adeel Shaikh, Faculty Member Department of Management Science, continued his responsibilities as a Director General BUMUN.
The conference is expected to bring together over 300 students from all the departments of the university and various other educational institutes across Pakistan to engage in debates and discussions over serious issues currently faced by the nations of the world.
The United Nations committees that will be emulated this year will be Special Political and Colonization (SPECPOL), United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), United Nation Security Council (UNSC), Disarmament & International Security (DISEC), UN-Women, Pakistan National Assembly (PNA), Karachi Crisis Bureau (KCB) and Arab League. Each committee will comprise of around 60 students whereas UNSC will have 18 members as per the United Nations’ format.
The conference will expand the thresholds of students’ understanding of politics, conflict management, public speaking skills and problem-solving abilities. The eight committee sessions spread over three days will push the students to their absolute best and beyond by asking them to engage in an exhausting amount of research and exhilarating debates. The students will be reinvigorated for each round of discussions by accompanying social events on all three days.
