WORLD OCEANS DAY CELEBRATIONS AT NCMPR KARACHI
Karachi: National Centre for Maritime Policy Research (NCMPR), Karachi chapter of Institute of Maritime Affairs, organized the celebrations of World Oceans Day from 04-08 June 2018. NCMPR’s celebrations were focused to highlight theme for this year which is “Preventing Plastic Pollution and Encouraging Solutions for a Healthy Ocean”. The celebrations were inaugurated by Vice Admiral Khawaja Ghazanfar Hussain HI(M) (Retd) Director General Bahria University Karachi campus (BUKC). In his inaugural address he said oceans are crucial component that support life on the earth. He highlighted that due to various manmade activities oceans are exposed to challenge of pollution; and plastic effluence has become most threatening element which not only pollutes the oceans but also destroys the marine life. He insisted that we should discourage use of plastic in our daily life and by opting for other sources.
On the occasion Dr. Hira Amjad, Assistant Professor and KPT Chair at NCMPR presented an informative talk on the theme for this year. She also presented a talk in a seminar on World Oceans Day held at KPT Staff College Karachi. In order to enhance the awareness for protecting oceans, Wrist Bands and pamphlets inscribed with awareness messages were distributed among the students. Moreover, awareness banners highlighting the importance of oceans were also displayed at prominent places in the university and Pakistan Maritime Museum. An Ocean Pledge Wall was also raised at NCMPR Bahria University where large number of visitors, faculty members, staff and students signed their pledges for promoting healthy oceans for the healthy planet.
