QA Directorate Conducts Training Session for QAC

As a capacity building exercise for the faculty, Quality Assurance Directorate conducted training on “How to Prepare Self-Assessment Report” and “Self-Academic Audit” on 18 Oct 2017. Director QA, Fazal Wahab was the resource person of the training. The session was attended by QACs of all respective departments of BU Islamabad Campus.

The training was comprised of two sessions. In first session significance of Self-Academic Audit was highlighted for identifying weakness and strengths of the programs. In second session resource person briefed Quality Assurance Committee (QAC) members about how to prepare and write comprehensive Self-Assessment Report. He also provided some useful guidelines for activating QACs.

Overall the session was very interactive, the participants discussed the issues under consideration. Q/A session also proved to be significant as many queries were addressed to the entire satisfaction of the participants.

Riphah International University and Quality and Productivity Society of Pakistan (QPSP) jointly organized a national seminar on “Quality Assurance in Higher Education” at Riphah International University Rawalpindi on June 17, 2016. gp The objective of the seminar was to discuss the key challenges in implementing the quality assurance mechanism in Pakistani universities. Mr. Fazal Wahab Director Quality Assurance Bahria University, QA Manager Bahria University Islamabad Campus and M. Iftikhar Ali QA Officer from Directorate of Quality Assurance Bahria University Head Office Islamabad attended the national seminar. The session was attended by various quality assurance experts, deans, directors and faculty members from more than 40 public and private sector universities of the country. seminar

 

Pro-Chancellor Riphah International University Mr. Hassan Muhammad Khan welcomed the participants. He shared the great news that Riphah has recently won Internal Quality Assurance Award. He thanked the participants who had come from all over the country to attend this event.sc1

Chairman QPSP Prof. Dr. Ali Sajid, speaking at the occasion, said that quality infrastructure of Pakistani Institutions is facing different challenges such as low level of empowerment to vice chancellors, low budgetary allocations, low training and staff of faculty, lack of industry funded projects and low quality culture. Adding further, he said that this has led to inadequate faculty development mechanism and ineffective performance management system in universities. To overcome these challenges he recommended that university quality enhancement departments have to make an extra effort in terms of involvement in implementation of the quality processes.fw

Director QEC Riphah International University Brig. (R) Salim Ahmed Khan talked about University Ranking Criteria set by Higher Education Commission Pakistan. Highlighting the key points of the quality scorecard he emphasized that universities must align their activities according to parameters set by HEC. He concluded with the remarks that universities should focus on increase in number of research proposals, patent registrations, increase in number of PhD qualified faculty, training and development of faculty and university-industry linkage.

The session also included panel discussion in which QA experts from Iqra University, NUST, Air University and UHS Lahore discussed the key challenges they faced in implementing quality processes.

Vice Chancellor Riphah International University Prof. Dr. Anis Aschmed, while giving his concluding remarks, appreciated the effort of all experts who gathered at one forum to discuss the challenges. He assured that Riphah will always play key role in imparting quality education according to Islamic ethical values.

BU has been striving for promoting QA Awareness and capacity building at national level. Quality Assurance Directorate is regularly conducting Workshops, Seminars and Guest Lectures on Self-Assessment, QA Procedures and Anti Plagiarism. Policies like Cash Award, Best University Teacher Award are also introduced to motivate for promotion of Quality Research at national and international level as per HEC requirement.

Bahria University, Quality Enhancement Cell regularly arranges guest lectures for the capacity building of all the Faculty Members, invited Prof. Aman ullah Khan, Dean, Management Sciences, Riphah International University, on 17 November 2015 to deliver a lecture on “Quality Assurance and Self-Assessment”. Prof Aman ullah discussed the Self- Assessment Procedure and its importance in improving the quality of teaching in a University. He emphasized that Self-Assessment is the prime function of QEC. He briefly touched upon the role and responsibilities of Program and Assessment Teams and necessary pre-requisites for conducting a successful Self-Assessment Exercise.

Guest Speaker also discussed the impact of self-assessment on the quality of teaching and learning in the classroom and how a teacher can plan his/her lesson after doing her own lesson evaluation. Question Answer session proved interactive as many queries of the participants were addressed.

At the end of this lecture, Commodore (R) Hassan Mustafa Director Campus, Bahria University, presented the University souvenir to the visiting dignitary.

QA Organizes Guest Lecture on Self-Assessment

The purpose of the lecture was to brief the Faculty Members about the significance of Self-Assessment and Quality Assurance in the Higher Education. Guest Speaker discussed 8 Criterion and 31 Standards of Self-Assessment laid down by HEC in detail. Q/A session was also held and it proved very beneficial, many queries related to Accreditation bodies and Self–Assessment were discussed and answered to the satisfaction of audience. Rear Admiral (R) Saleem Akhtar, Pro – Rector presented BU Crest as memento to the visiting dignitary.

Bahria University promotes quality culture by conducting Workshops, Seminars and Guest Lectures on regular basis.  As a capacity building exercise, Quality Enhancement Cell Bahria University, invited Brig (R) Engr. Salim Ahmed Khan, Director Quality Enhancement, Riphah International University, on 8 May 2015 to deliver a lecture on “Improving Relevance and Quality of Undergraduate Education” and to conduct a workshop on preparation of Self-Assessment Reports. Pro- Rector, Rear Admiral (R) Salim Akhtar, Directors, Research Scholars & maximum available Faculty Members attended the lecture.

In the first session, Guest Speaker highlighted the mechanism and the good practices through the case studies for improving relevance and quality of undergraduate education. He explained the significant roles of the Stakeholders that include Students and Faculty, in improving the quality of education. The case study regarding the grooming of the new entrants in the University was also very interesting and impressive.

During second session the Guest Speaker briefed and explained the methodology of writing a comprehensive Self-Assessment Report (SAR) to the Program Team Members of various programs of Islamabad Campus. The participants of this activity appreciated the simple and easy to understand approach of the speaker and felt confident of writing the Self-Assessment Reports, in future. The Question Answer sessions were very interactive and that clarified many queries. At the end of the activity, Rear Admiral (R) Salim Akhtar, Pro – Rector Bahria University, presented the University souvenir to the visiting dignitary.

Muhammad Ismail, Director Quality Assurance, National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), on 21 May 2015 to deliver a lecture on “Role of QEC, Program Team and Assessment Team”. Directors, HODs, Research Scholars and Senior Faculty Members attended the lecture.

Guest Speaker briefed about QEC functions in a university. He emphasized that Self-Assessment is the prime function of QEC. He elaborated the role, composition, desired skills and responsibilities of Program and Assessment Teams and necessary pre-requisites for conducting a successful Self-Assessment Exercise. The Question Answer session clarified many queries of the audience.

At the end of the activity, Advisor (R&D) Rear Admiral (R) Muhammad Mushtaq, Bahria University, presented the University souvenir to the visiting dignitary.

 

BU QA Staff Officers Attended HEC Indigenous on Campus Training Program

Bahria University organized Indigenous on Campus Training in collaboration with HEC in October 2014. Mr. Muhammad Iftikhar Ali, QA Officer/Data Analyst represented Quality Assurance Directorate in the event.

Mr. Muddassar Javed, Manager QA attended five days Indigenous on Campus Training organized by Institute for Space and Technology (IST) in collaboration with HEC in Jan 2015.

Workshop on Anti-Plagiarism and Utilization of Turnitin at BU Campuses

Quality Assurance Directorate organized workshop on “Anti-Plagiarism and Utilization of Turnitin” at all respective campuses (Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore) of BU in June 2015.

Dr. Najam-ul-Islam, Dean Engineering Sciences, HEC Focal Person on Anti-Plagiarism at Bahria University was the resource person the workshop.

The purpose of the workshop was to aware faculty members particularly junior FMs about lack of procedural understanding and interpretation of the ‘TURNITIN’ software resulting in delays and at times rejection of well researched papers/articles.

The 8th Quarterly meeting of Quality Enhancement Cells of Public Sector Universities (Phase-III) was held at HEC head office Islamabad under the chairmanship of Dr. Mohammed Rafiq Baloch, Director General (QAA) on January 15-16, 2015. Captain (R) Aqeel Akhtar, Director Quality Assurance and Cdr (R) Muhammad Mudassir attended the meerting.

The chaired focuses on the progress of Corrective Actions based on the SARs and underscore the need of more effective approach to be adopted by the QECs for creating awareness of QS International Rankings among the universities for achieving better results in the future. Furthermore decisions/recommendations to empower the QECs were also deliberated

Two sessions workshop on “Six Sigma in Higher Education” was held on second day of the meeting. Mr. Farrukh Idrees, National University of Computer & Emerging Sciences (FAST), Islamabad, was the resource person. The participants admired found the workshop very informative and a new experience.

At the end of the meetings certificates among the participants were distributed.

DQA visited Universities of UK & Turkey

A delegation of Bahria University visited Yasar University, Turkey, Durham University, UK & University of Bedfordshire, UK for a learning visit from 20th March till 1st Apr 2015. The delegation comprised of Registrar, Director Human Resource, Director Quality Assurance & Public Relation Officer. The objective of the training attachment/learning visit was to enable the selected administrative staff at BU to shadow relevant department at BU partner institutes and learn the administrative practices being followed internationally to support the academic functions of the University. In addition various collaborative activities were explored with the above mentioned institutes for faculty/staff development, joint conferences, revision of existing articulation arrangements, research attachments, etc.
