Bahria University College of Allied Health Sciences (BUCAHS) successfully organized its 1st Biotechnology Poster & Model Competition–2025 under the theme “NextGen Biotechnology” at the Ibn-e-Sina Auditorium, Bahria University Health Sciences Karachi (BUHSCK). The cheif guest of the event Vice Admiral (Retd.) Ather Mukhtar HI (M), Director General BUHSC graced the event with his esteemed presence. The event was aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 2, 3 and 9), Zero Hunger, Good Health and Well-being, Industry Innovation and Infrastructure. The event commenced with the recitation of the Holy Quran, followed by a welcome address from Prof. Dr. Shazia Shakoor, Dean Health Sciences BUHSCK, who emphasized biotechnology as a powerful interdisciplinary science from next-generation food systems to advanced biomedical solutions.
The conference brought together distinguished professors, students, and early-career researchers from leading universities, including University of Karachi, Dow University of Health Sciences, Salim Habib University, Hamdard University, Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology (FUUAST) and host Bahria University Health Sciences, Karachi. Participants presented innovative concepts covering cutting-edge trends in biotechnology, showcasing advancements in medical biotechnology, genomics, bioinformatics, environmental biotechnology, agricultural biotechnology, synthetic biology, marine biotechnology and next-generation molecular tools.
Renowned Scientists, including Prof. Dr. Saifullah Khan, Deputy Director General at the Biological Research Centre, DESTO and Dr. Saifullah Khan, Associate Professor, Department of Biotechnology, University of Karachi, appreciated the quality of student research and acknowledged that young scientific community of Pakistan possesses exceptional potential and said that in coming years, Pakistan will advance toward self-reliance in biotechnology-based products to reduce the country’s dependency on imports.
In the concluding session, Vice Admiral (Retd.) Ather Mukhtar HI (M), Director General BUHSCK, highlighted the significance of experiential learning and interdisciplinary engagement. He stated that such forums foster creativity, innovation, and confidence in young scientists and promote collaboration between institutions which is essential for developing national and international research partnerships. He further added that Bahria University will continue to host and expand such events to strengthen research and innovation, and in the future, the university aims to enhance scientific collaborations from inter-departmental and inter-city levels to broader cross-city and national partnerships.
Awards and certificates were presented to the top three winners from both categories, Posters and Models followed by shields of appreciation for outstanding contributions. Prof. Dr. Mehreen Lateef, Principal BUCAHS, who led the event, extended a heartfelt vote of thanks to her organizing team. She said that the event demonstrated how biotechnology can address community challenges through precision medicine, precision agriculture and climate resilience. She commended the students and researchers for presenting scientifically sound, knowledge-rich, and innovative ideas that reflect the immense talent and promise of Pakistan’s young scientists. The event concluded with a renewed commitment to nurturing innovation and strengthening the biotechnology ecosystem in Pakistan.
