Karachi, 24 July, 2025
As the part of Bahria University Go Green Mission under the direction of Vice Admiral (R) Athar Mukhtar, HI (M) Director General, Health Sciences Campus Karachi, Bahria University College of Allied Health Sciences (BUCAHS) arranged a Plantation Drive on July 23, 2025, as part of the Biotechnology Summer Internship program-2025. The purpose of the drive was aligned with Bahria University “Go Green Initiative” and Sustainable Development Goals: SDG 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities, SDG 13 Climate Action, SDG 15 Life on Land.
The objectives of the “Plantation Drive” were to enhance practical skills of students for plant propagation, grass transplantation and landscaping techniques and to advocate the role of plants and green spaces to combat climate change and improve urban air quality along with promotion of community participation in environmental sustainability through collaborative plantation efforts and awareness.
This activity was held at the community park of an urban area (Cosy Homes) near Hassan Square, supervised Mr. Kamran Yaqoob, Agriculture Biotechnologist and Prof. Dr. Mehreen Lateef, Principal BUCAHS and their team. The plantation drive was organized to provide practical training in landscaping and plantation techniques to internees. Mr. Akbar Ali, president of the Cosy Homes community, along with their team, warmly welcomed the university delegation and appreciated the efforts of the students and faculty.
Agriculture biotechnology experts from the BUCAHS highlighted the importance of field trials to the students and emphasized that field-based skills must be integrated with molecular research to ensure food security and develop climate-resilient crop varieties. They prepared soil beds, planted grass, applied organic fertilizers, and learned proper watering methods. This experience not only enhanced the student’s skills for plant propagation but also encouraged their active participation in community driven environmental improvement efforts. Gardeners from Bahria University Health Sciences Campus Karachi (BUHSCK), Mr. Irfan and Mr. Haseeb, actively assisted and guided the students throughout the process along with the MDRL lab staff, Ms Shumaila Farooq and Mr. Raza Ali.
At the end of the session, local community members were encouraged to maintain and take care of the planted grass, as their continued involvement plays a vital role in maintaining green spaces to improve urban air quality and combating climate change. The drive served not only as a practical learning platform but also as a step toward promoting community awareness and shared environmental responsibility.
