Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery deals with the diagnosis and management of various diseases of the mouth, jaws and salivary glands. This specialty has evolved through the ages and presently the oral & maxillofacial surgeons work as part of multidisciplinary teams, comprising Head & Neck Surgeons, Plastic Reconstructive Surgeons, Speech & Language therapist and Oncologists dealing with complex pathologies involving the craniofacial region.
The undergraduate oral surgery program is taught over a period of 2 years, in the 3rd and Final years. Objective of the course is to prepare young Dentists for various oral surgical procedures that they are likely to encounter in the course of their future independent dental practice. Emphasis is placed on dentoalveolar procedures, management of medical emergencies in the dental office, orofacial trauma, dental implants as well as chronic orofacial pain.
A wide variety of teaching methodologies are utilized such as traditional large group teaching to seminars, workshops, small group teaching, and chair-side clinical teaching. Students are exposed to a wide variety of orofacial pathologies in their clinical rotation. All students get to attend major maxillofacial procedures in operating theatre, at our attached teaching hospital. Students are encouraged to participate in ongoing research projects in the department.
