The Science of Dental Materials is a specialized field that focuses on the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of materials used in clinical dentistry and their interaction with the oral tissues. This includes examining the composition, manipulation techniques, applications, and interactions of these materials with the oral environment. A thorough understanding of these properties and clinical handling is essential for selecting appropriate dental materials in dentistry.
The Department of Dental Materials is staffed by a team of skilled and dedicated educators. It also features a well-equipped laboratory where students can practice essential skills and become familiar with commonly used dental materials. To align with modern educational standards and to promote professional-level knowledge, the department employs a variety of teaching methods including, multimedia lectures, video demonstrations, digital e-learning methods, short group discussions, practical sessions, and regular assessments including PBLs.
The Department equips students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary to effectively use current and emerging materials. The course encompasses an overview of major material types used in dentistry, such as polymers, metals, ceramics, and restorative materials, etc and their properties, manipulation techniques, testing methods, and application processes.
A well-equipped Dental Materials Laboratory has been set up, featuring ample workstations for students to get thoroughly engaged in their practical exercises. The laboratory includes specialized areas such as a Plaster Room, Curing Room, and Dental Museums.
The objective of the subject is to offer in-depth knowledge and critical analysis of both the scientific and clinical aspects of dental materials.
