Culture & Global Harmony

Attainment of global harmony and peaceful coexistence is a desire that we all have within us and is important for building a true global community with a common goal of achieving a prosperous and peaceful future for the coming generations.

Humans by nature are peace loving and this desire for harmony appears to be preprogrammed in our psyche.

I am sure most of us would agree that man by nature is born good – it is the harshness and cruelty of our surroundings that make a person’s mind negative and prone towards aggressive behavior.

Negativity, polarization and disharmony in our global environment, war and economic disparity are product of injustices and is afflicting several regions of our planet.

The World Economic Forum even ranked the increasing polarization of societies as one of the top global risks. Collaborative action by world leaders and media players is urgently required to control and avert further disharmony and volatility in our world.

Traditional and the social media are important for bringing diverse cultures and minds closer and help develop the concept of a global community living in a peaceful global environment ideal for cognitive harmony.

The mind loves to be in places which are soothing and avoids cognitive dissonance. The media is an apt tool for creating positivity and harmony and gel us into a global community.

The international media particularly the social media has become more vibrant and can be utilized for educating people from different cultures to respect and learn for each other to create an ideal global culture ensconced in peace and prosperity. A dialogue for unifying communities of diverse cultures is sine qua none for establishing a culture of peace and mutual respect.

Every culture has its own rich history which can be shared for creating positive peace and harmony in the world. Every religion preaches respect for human life and nature – respect for life and earth should be inculcated in the minds of the new generation to make our living on this planet more sustainable and harmonious with nature.

Social media and the traditional media should adopt an agenda to usher positive peace in our global village to enable the human race to work on a mutually beneficial shared goal of attaining peace and prosperity.

Cultural references determine our identity and the ways in which we construct reality – the media can help by reflecting the truth and presenting the true values of each culture instead of distorting and perverting national values. The communities of the global village should aim together for a better future and for avoiding cultural and economic clashes.

Let the process of globalization promote a harmonious multifaceted, multi-dimensional culture where all would be free from the tyranny of violence, ideas and fake news. Globalization should not only focus on technological and economic growth but promote global peace and growth of positive ideas for developing a single community out of so many nations with a single agenda for world peace.

Increased interaction among people, free flow of information, and freedom from cultural hegemony and reliance on traditional powerful media centers is important for achieving the vision of a peaceful world.

Chinese and other media players are actively changing the playing field. We in Pakistan now have alternate channels of news and entertainment, CCTV English, Xinhua and Chinese content from social media are now easily available for Pakistani media consumers. The language barriers are gradually fading away with enhanced economic activities under the CPEC umbrella.

The Pakistani and Chinese media while respecting each other’s cultural diversity are producing positive vibes in the region which are creating a mutually beneficial culture for growth and prosperity in the region.

Media should be promoting cultural and political diversity – the concept of equality, justice, and peaceful co-existence i.e. democracy are present in every culture. The expression of values may differ from culture to culture but the basic values and desire for creating happiness and prosperity for the people is similar.

An intercultural dialogue across the globe is now possible and essential for creating respect for diverse cultures and enjoying the art, literature and value systems of our global village.

Peace grows with respecting each other’s values systems and media can help educate us to respect cultural diversity and views.
