Society of Empowerment (SoE) organized, Immersion 2019, a business management simulation competition. The competition gave students the opportunity to learn in an experiential manner and appreciate how to create and manage a modern day business and compete with other students teams using a commercial-off-the-shelf business simulation game, Capitalism 2. The game places players in the position of corporate CEO and face real-world challenges as they build a business empire. It’s a comprehensive business simulation that gives players the power to: (1) Make critical business decisions in all areas including retail, manufacturing, marketing, research, agriculture, mining, real estate development and more, (2) hire and fire upper management positions such as Chief Operating Officer, Chief Marketing Officer, and Chief Technical Officer, (3) Develop your own technology or acquire it from another company, (4) Invest in a realistic stock market that allows trading of stocks for quick profits or make long-term investments for ultimate rewards, (5) manage public image and relations through newspaper publishers, TV, and radio stations.

This competition helped students bridge the theoretical and abstract business concepts and theories with (simulated) practical hands-on experience.

Students thoroughly enjoyed the competition since traditional teaching approach uses lectures, textbooks and case studies which are all passive teaching / learning methods and therefore fail to provide do not provide enough learning opportunities for creative uses of the theories to solve problems in the real business world unlike business simulation games which are designed to complement the traditional teaching methods that enables students to apply their theoretical business knowledge in an interactive simulation environment and observe the impacts of their business decisions and learn from the experience effectively.
