Tripartite Dialogue on Future of Work

The Future of Work Centenary Initiative is ILO’s response to the process of change taking place at an incredible speed and scale to constitute a transformation of the world of work. The “Future of Work” is one of the seven initiatives that would mark the ILO’s centenary in 2019. As part of its centenary celebration, a dialogue process on “Future of Work” has been initiated in all member countries to identify country perspective on future shape of work. The Future of Work conversation mainly focuses on the following main areas:
- Work and society
- Decent work for all
- Organization of work
- Governance of work
The Employers’ Federation of Pakistan (EFP) and the Global Compact Network Pakistan (GCNP) in collaboration with the International Labor Organization (ILO) and Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development (OP&HRD), Government of Pakistan organized the first consultation session on “Future of Work” on Friday, 23rd September, 2016 at Bahria University Karachi Campus (BUKC) as an initiative to start the dialogue process in Pakistan to document national perspective on the future of work event.
The event began with the recitation of the Holy Quran followed by the welcome address by Ms. Ingrid Christensen, Country Director of the ILO Pakistan. She discussed the importance of the ILO and its importance in planning for various challenges ahead especially how businesses can be sustainably be competitive in the future.
The President Employers’ Federation of Pakistan, Mr. Khawaja Muhammad Nauman, also remarked about role of ILO in the development of employee well-being and rights.
The academia of Bahria University, Karachi Campus also contributed to the discussion regarding the “Future of Work”. Dr. Bashir Ahmad, PGP Coordinator, BUKC focused on relationship between work and society and how everyone has the opportunity to respectable work. Furthermore he highlighted the importace of the governance and organization of work itself. Head of Department, Management Sciences department, Dr. Mustaghis ur Rahman discussed how entrepreneurs and small medium enterprises can play their role in the development of profitable business that can handle the challenges of the future in a sustainable and scalable manner.
The Chief Guest of the event Ms. Tomoko Nishimoto, Assistant Director General Regional Director Asia & Pacific to Pakistan, gave a speech and highlighted the importance of the youth in the planning of development of better future opportunity. She also talked about the threat of robotics and new technologies and how they will change the employment landscape.
The facilitators of the event proceeded to take the opinions of the audience on various issues and challenges faced by the employers and employees of Pakistan in the radically changing environment.
The discussions were summed up Mr. Ahsan Ullah Khan, President GCNP while Mr. Abdul Rasheed Solangi, Secretary Labour & Human Resources Government of Sindh also shared is valued opinions about the topic. Concluding remarks were presented by Mr. Fasih Ul Karim Siddiqi, Secretary General EFP & Secretary GCNP.
Souvenirs were presented to the honoured guests and distinguished speakers by Head of Department, Management Sciences department, Dr. Mustaghis ur Rahman and Mr. Khawaja Muhammad Nauman, President Employers’ Federation of Pakistan.
The event provided a unique opportunity to the employers, workers, government, academia and civil society to participate and give their input on this important subject which is going to define the future shape and structure of the world of work in the next millennium.
