Introduction

Starting from just one state-owned television channel, Pakistan’s media industry has come a long way with over 120 channels now operating from different parts of the country. Along with TV channels, the radio broadcast industry has also witnessed a revolution with the emergence of FM stations. Although the print media is lagging behind, at least two new English dailies have come out in the last five years which are going strong so far. Print, however, is giving way to online journalism which operates almost along the same lines as a newspaper. Only, it’s faster. The news media is a world in its own which is changing the decade-long concepts and theories practiced by media professionals.

With this rise comes an ever increasing demand for media professionals. And that’s where the Media Studies Department of Bahria University Karachi Campus comes in. Given the need of skillful media persons in our industry, the MSD is striving to produce well-rounded graduates who can make their place in the industry soon after passing out from the university.

The Media Studies Department offers courses that fulfill the requirement of technical training as well the knowledge of theoretical aspects that dominate the national and international media industries. Our students are taught the best media practices no matter what field they opt for.

Our curriculum focuses on all aspects of media – electronic, print and the new media. From the very early stages, our students are taught highly technical subjects such as Videography, News Writing and Reporting, New Media: Media, culture and Society, Advertising and Public Relations, Photojournalism, News Editing, Animation and Digital Media Production, Event Management etc. all such courses are offered with a hands-on training approach in view and more emphasis is given to practical work in these courses.

In addition to practical courses, the MSD offers theory-based media related courses such as Theories of Mass Communication, Inter-Cultural Communication, Media Law and Ethics, Development Support Communication etc. The courses help students develop a critical approach towards analyzing media content and use their skills for the benefit of society.

Along with this, a healthy mix of liberal arts courses such as Critical Thinking, Anthropology, Political Science and Current Affairs are also taught so that students can develop a fair understanding of the world and issues around them.
