Shehzad Khalid completed his PhD degree in Computer Vision and Machine Learning from University of Manchester, UK in 2009. He is the HoD/Professor of Computer Engineering and heading Multimedia Data Analytics Research Center at Bahria University. He has almost 2 decades of teaching and research experience. He has published 85+ Impact Factor Journal Publications along with many other HEC Recognized and International Conference publications. He has worked on various projects as PI/Co-PI amounting to Rs. 60 Million+. He got many distinctions during his research and academic career. He has been awarded Best University Teacher Award by HEC in 2014 and have been awarded Best Researcher Award by Bahria University for 5 consecutive years. He has also been the reviewer of number of Impact Factor Journals. His research interests include Computer Vision, Machine Learning, Medical Multimedia Analytics, Natural Language Processing, Signal Processing etc.

Funded Research Project

Provision of Business Enterprise Incubation Services in Islamabad: FATA Transition and Recovery Program – Project Director (Funded by UNDP, Islamabad: Rs. 42.9 million)

With support from United Nations Development programme (UNDP), Bahria University is imparting its incubation services to 360 entrepreneurs from the North Waziristan, South Waziristan and Khyber Agency as part of the UNDP’s FATA Economic Revitalization Project (FERP). The Program is imparting entrepreneurial training through provision of business incubation services to its talented pool of Entrepreneurs from the regions. The programme will support entrepreneurs to test out new business ideas in the market by providing technical assistance in the form of mentoring, coaching and training; and reducing associated financial risk in the form of a grant.


Content based Indexing and Retrieval of Videos (ICT R&D Funded: Rs. 10.3 million)

ICTRND funded project which is aimed at developing a content based video indexing and retrieval system. The caption text appearing in videos is used as the primary index while the audio content in these videos serve as the secondary index. The text detection is proposed to be generic allowing detection of multilingual text from videos – Urdu and English being considered for the current project. Textual content based indexing will be carried out either by recognizing the keywords or through word spotting. In a similar fashion, keywords will be searched in the audio stream and the videos will be indexed on the provided vocabulary of keywords. During the retrieval phase, user may provide a query keyword and retrieve all videos containing occurrences of the query word.


Network enabled retinal image analysis and screening system for grading and diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy (ICT R&D Funded: Rs. 15.3 million) 2012-2014

ICTRND funded project which is a telemedicine system for tele-screening of DR with capabilities of self diagnosis, real time access to data from rural areas, assignment of ophthalmologist for expert opinion and management of a national database for regular monitoring. The project is implemented and operational in AFIO, Rawalpindi.


Automated Forest Fire Detection and Planning for Spread-Control/Mitigation (NESCOM Funded: Rs. 0.3 million)

NESCOM funded project to design and develop a solution for detection of fire using drone images in a forest for its early identification and proper mitigation.
